…the pilgrim dinners. The way it works is that you reserve a place and pay up front for a three course meal with wine – c.10-12 euros. You then all turn up at the same time – it has been 7pm for me these last two days – and sit with a bunch of strangers and chat. So today I chatted to French, Dutch, Australian, Austrian and American fellow pilgrims over dinner. I then had a follow up beer with my German friend (he’s an engineer and has been planning his Camino for 2 years – he claims he loves living up to the stereotype). I even met an English guy who has done the Camino many times and was full of pretty useful advice. Lots of interesting people with interesting lives all coming together to do this walk and the most interesting fact of them all is that no-one is being a prat. No-one is anxious to tell you – or, in that insidious English way, imply to you – why they are better, richer or more clever than you. There is something very humbling about being on this pilgrimage.
