The Camino is teaching me some new concepts so I thought I’d write down some of my top tips for this type of travel:

– don’t share a room with 11 Spanish women

– the quickest way to dry damp clothes in the morning is to put them on and start walking. Once the shivering stops, it is really effective

– thanks to Saffy for this one; soap powder is unnecessary. A block of soap and a penknife with which to create flakes is fine for creating a suds. A washing machine would however be immensely helpful, if a little heavy in the rucksack.

– your body is a moron and tells you all sorts of things. If we were meant to listen to it, we would have brains in our knees.

– the best breakfast is a half-baguette, eaten while ambling. None of the other pilgrims will be English so it’s ok to let standards drop.

– walking poles are, contrary to popular belief, amazing.

– Spain is quite big.

– toes create all sorts of problems – leave them at home.
