It was Flanders and Swann who sang “The English, the English, the English are best, I wouldn’t give tuppence for all of the rest”.
I think I am realistic enough to know that this isn’t necessarily a factual song. However at last night’s pilgrim dinner where the native languages were English, Italian, Dutch, German and Spanish, English certainly proved to be the best way of communicating with each other. Heck, there was even a pilgrim from America who could speak some English…
